INGA MFUNDISI – Inga participated at the SA Junior Chess Championships which was held in Boksburg, Gauteng from the 4 – 8 January. She represented the Western Province U18 mixed team.
The competition consisted of 7 rounds of 3 hours each and was of an extremely high level against all the players from around the country. Inga played board 3 and won a total of 5.5 out of 7 rounds. She was also selected by the Overberg Chess Federation to participate in the Grand Simultaneous against Super Grand Master Levon Aronian. This chess prodigy travelled all the way from Armenia to play against 108 players from the competition.
Inga says, “Although it was an awesome experience after a daunting six hours against Levon, I lost the game, but learnt many new tactics from the prodigy himself.”
The Western Province U18 Inga was a part of ended up in an overall 4th position.
ZOë EYBERG – Zoë also participated in the Championships and played at board 4 in the team event and won 6.5 out of 7 rounds. Her team ended up in second overall position and Zoë has qualified for the SA Closed taking place in March.
Zoë also competed at the Western Cape Closed (8 – 14 December) where she played in the women’s B-category. She won 4 out of 5 games and ended up in 1st place.
