Hermanus put its best foot forward this past weekend, with amazing weather and beautiful scenery spoiling the more than 1 000 entrants participating in the fourth annual Hi-Tec Walkerbay Xtreme adventure sports festival.
Stellenbosch Triathlon Squad coach Vicky van der Merwe successfully defended her title in the Big 6 Xtreme. This event sees athletes competing in the street mile, 35 km MTB Challenge, swim-run-jump challenge, sprint triathlon, open water swim, and trail run.
“I just love the Hi-Tec Walkerbay Xtreme. It offers so many options for athletes of all levels,” says Vicky.
First-time participant Michael Ross, a postgraduate student at UCT, won the men’s category of the Big 6 Xtreme. “It was a fantastic event. I had an incredible weekend and I’ll definitely be back,” he enthused.
Gerhardi Odendaal, CEO of organisers Old School Group, is very satisfied with the outcome of the weekend. OSG co-owns and runs the event in close association and partnership with sponsor Hi-Tec, the Hermanus Business Chamber and Hermanus Tourism.
“Since its inception, the team behind the WBX has sought to raise the profile of Hermanus and showcase the region for the breath-taking hidden gem it is. We feel we have succeeded in this goal,” he added.
